Lighting Workshop

lightworkshop_07

Preston Photographic Club members and visitors were inspired following the lighting workshop presented at the last meeting (14 April).

Everyone broke up into small groups and went through five stations where a teaching club member led a 20-minute workshop on a different technique and effect.

Club members work on improving their portraits against a black background.

It was a huge success. Members and visitors said they loved the hands-on approach and they picked up a lot of tips in a short amount of time. We look forward to more great workshops. A big thanks to Steven Pace, Stephen Currie, Alison Crea, Fabian Scarmozzino, and Joe Conte for organizing and leading this event.

It’s not too late to join us! To find out more about the Preston Photographic Club, visit our About Us page.

The Western Treatment Plant

Members of the Preston Photographic Club got up bright and early last Saturday morning to drive down to the Western Treatment Plant, one of the most important wetlands in Australia and a popular site for birdwatching. With lagoons, grasslands, the coast, and over 284 species of birds recorded there, it was a wonderful opportunity for some nature and wildlife photography.

Here are just a few of the beautiful images captured that morning.

2 Great Websites for Finding Models

photography
StarNow

Are you tired of photographing your friends and family members? Would you like more variety among your models? Are you searching for models for your photography, but don’t know where to look? Are you a novice photographer who can’t afford to pay top dollar for professional models?

At our last meeting, Preston Photographic Club member Joe Conte shared two excellent resources that he uses to find models for his photography: Model Mayhem and StarNow.

Both Model Mayhem and StarNow are job websites for models, photographers, hair stylists, make-up artists, actors and so forth. Both are great for connecting photographers of all levels with different kinds of models with varying degrees of experience. Many models that are just starting out are willing to pose for free in exchange for images they can add to their own portfolios.

Here are some tips for using these sites successfully:

  • Fill out your profile as much as possible. The more complete, the better.
  • Upload samples of your work with models so other models know what to expect from you. These are not website for showcasing your work with landscapes or wildlife.
  • Be honest about what you’re looking for.
  • Follow through. If you promise to give a model prints or digital images in exchange for posing for you, be sure to do so. Your reputation will grow and it will either help or harm you.

Thank you, Joe, for these terrific resources.

Galen Rowell: A Retrospective.

Rowell_001

We have many great books in the Preston Photographic Club’s Library. One of them is Galen Rowell: A Retrospective.

Rowell is an adventure photographer and A Retrospective collects more than 175 of his magnificent images representing all phases and dimensions of his amazing career. Here’s what Preston Photographic Club member Fabian Scarmozzino had to say about Galen Rowell: A Retrospective.

I just finished reading Galen Rowell: A Retrospective. Wow! Great inspiration! It makes you want to go and explore the beautiful nature out there. He loved rock-climbing and also liked to put himself in a lot of his photos to add dramatic effect. As I love taking landscape photos myself, I found all his photos great and beautiful. The only thing I didn’t like about him is that he used a Nikon; I’m a Canon user (laughs).

“I love beach scenery,” said Fabian.

“The lynx in the flowers, I like the story behind it,” said Fabian.
