A Weekend Away

Last weekend, members of the Preston Photographic Club traveled to Rye for a photography-filled weekend on the beach.

Fabian Scarmozzino generously opened his family’s holiday home in Rye where about 15 club members gathered for good food, great conversation, and terrific photography. We arrived on Friday night, had a barbecue, and settled in for the night.

On Saturday, we got up before dawn and went to Cape Schanck, the southernmost tip of the Mornington Peninsula, for some sunrise photography. After a hearty breakfast back at the house, we ventured to Sixteenth Beach with its lovely waterfalls and amazing Dragon’s Head rock and to Portsea’s Back Beach with its London Bridge rock arch. We had lunch in Sorrento and returned to the house for some down time before heading to Sorrento Back Beach for sunset photography. After dinner, we returned to Sorrento Back Beach for light painting.

On Sunday morning, some of us decided to sleep in a little while others went to Sorrento Pier for sunrise photography. After breakfast, it was time to pack up and head back to Melbourne. It was a wonderful experience. Big thanks to Fabian and to Joe Conte for helping to organize the weekend.

Jonathan Ho, http://jonathanho.com.au.

Last week, Preston Photographic Club member Fabian Scarmozzino presented Melbourne fashion and wedding photographer Jonathan Ho who gave a fun and highly informative workshop on how to use the various shooting modes our cameras offer.

Jonathan’s workshop briefly covered Aperture Priority (AV Mode) and Shutter Priority (TV Mode) before moving on to Manual. There was a lot of discussion on ISO, aperture, and shutter speeds, and how to use these in creative and technical ways to achieve the shot you want. He generated a lot of buzz among the club members present who were excited by his technique and enthusiasm. During a break and after the workshop, Jonathan kindly answered individual questions from club members.

For more information about him, please visit Jonathan Ho’s photography website. He also teaches workshops on a number of topics including various forms of photography such as night, sports, and landscape, as well as other technical subjects such as studio lighting and Abode Photoshop and Lightroom. For more information about Jonathan’s workshops, please visit Foto HQ.

Our many thanks to Jonathan Ho for his terrific workshop and to Fabian Scarmozzino for organizing.

White Night Melbourne

Flinders Street Station, White Night Melbourne 2013

White Night Melbourne returns this month promising to be bigger and better than last year’s inaugural event.

White Night is a global celebration of art in public spaces. In Melbourne, city streets, laneways, landmarks and cultural institutions are transformed into a cultural playground from dusk-till-dawn. It’s an urban adventure of exhibitions, street performances, fashion, lighting installations, film screenings, multimedia projections, concerts, dance and interactive events. Here are some scenes from last year:

White Night Melbourne is on 22 February from 7pm to 7am. It’s mostly free though there are some ticketed events. Please visit the White Night Melbourne website for more information.

White Night Melbourne is a wonderful opportunity to take some unique photos of a Melbourne transformed. I recommend arriving early as it’s a huge draw and take plenty of water. See you there!
