Hello Club members and friends!

I hope you enjoyed the Preston Photographic Club’s first meeting of the year. It was great to see such a great turn-out.

Today I’m posting the PowerPoint presentation I gave on Club Competitions. I hope you find it a useful resource. Just click to download it.

See you at the next meeting!

First Meeting of 2013

By Stephen Currie

After such a great year in 2012, the Club is now gearing up for 2013. Don’t forget that our first meeting of 2013 will be moved due to the Australia Day Public Holiday. We will be meeting on Tuesday 29th January in our usual room off the foyer of the Preston Libary at 7:30pm. It would be great if everyone could bring a JPEG of their favourite image taken over the break – no need for adjusting sizes or file size as it is not a competition.

As always, new members are welcome to come along and meet us.

2012 Club Exhibition at Michael’s Cameras City Store

Michaels 10/12

We are very pleased to invite you to our November Exhibition at Michaels Photographic Gallery – Level 1, cnr Lonsdale and Elizabeth Street, Melbourne.

Our Opening Night is Friday 2nd November 5:30 – 7:30 – please come along and help us celebrate.  Could members please bring a plate of nibbles to hand around.

The Exhibition is then open until Friday 30th November during store hours.  Please invite all your friends and family and colleagues to come along.  It showcases some great work by members.

AGM, Elections, and End of Year Competition

22nd October is the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Preston Photographic Club.

It is also election night.  We’d like to get another strong and vibrant committee next year and would love some new people to join the committee. If you’d like to stand for a position or would like to nominate another member please grab a nomination form at the meeting and fill it in, or contact the secretary to have one sent to you.

Also your end of year competition entries are due on the same night.

  • All place-getters and highly commended prints from a monthly competition this year may be entered.
  • If a member has less than three place-getters or highly commended in a category for the year, they can enter additional prints or digital images in this category up to a maximum of three entries (including the place-getters or highly commended entries).
  • All entered images or prints must have been entered in competition during the calendar year, and may not be altered in any way shape or form since they were last judged.
  • All projected images that received a place or were highly commended in a monthly competition this year will be automatically entered into the end of year competition.
  • Apart from projected images that were place getters or highly commended, the responsibility for submission for end of year judging is the sole responsibility of the member.

Just for Fun – 8th October

Our Club Competition for October is Just for Fun:

Any photo that brings joy, happiness, a smile, is uplifting, but still has photographic merits and shows the skills of the photographer. This competition will be due and judged on the same night. This is a technique that is used in another club and gives you a chance to see how judging can be done differently.

November Exhibition at michaels

The Preston Photographic Club will hold an exhibition at michaels Camera Video Digital store.

Club members are invited to participate.

Guide for exhibitors:

Club members may submit one or two open images in digital format.

All submissions must be provided as a JPEG or flattened TIFF files, with colour profile of Adobe RGB.

All submissions should have as fine a resolution as possible as they will be printed on A3 paper at 240 dpi.

As a guideline submissions should aim to be in excess of

  • 3863 pixels on the long edge OR
  • 2711 pixels on the short edge

Smaller images can still be submitted and may be printed in a smaller size but will be displayed in the same size mount.

Please do not resize your prints to meet these requirements.

Submissions are due 24 September.

With the aim of getting a consistent looking exhibition, we will be arranging the printing for all images in the exhibition.  We have arranged favourable terms for printing.  They will be printed at up to A3 size by Michaels Fine Art Printing at a significant discount on good quality bartya paper and presented with a white mount (20X16 inches).  The size of the final mounted print will be eligible for club or VAPS competitions.  If you want them framed after the competition, they should fit into a standard size frame.

The cost for each image submitted will be $35 including printing and mount. This is a significant discount. We will allow members to submit additional images for printing/mounting at this great rate.

We are asking everyone to pay for their prints in advance.

If you would like assistance with finalising your image in Photoshop or Lightroom, please let me (Deb) know and we’ll arrange someone to help you.

Each print will be exhibited with a label with the photographer’s name, the image title and we will also indicate Standard or Novice to indicate the competition class that the photographer competes in.

Popular Competition

As part of the exhibition we will be asking visitors to vote for their favourite image (in standard and in novice).  We will be selecting one entry at random and giving them their choice of image printed up as it is for the competition paid for by the club.

We will also be awarding a $50 printing voucher for the overall popular vote in both standard and in novice.

Time frames

All images must be provided by 24 September, but I will be seeking an indication if you will be participating by next meeting.

The exhibition will run from November 2nd to November 30th, with an opening night event on Friday 2nd.

We’ll like some assistance in hanging the exhibition from 4-6pm on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd November.

We may also be running a working-bee to assemble the photos.

Interclub Competition – Change of Venue

We will be holding an interclub competition with Parklands on September 10.  To make sure we have plenty of room we will be changing venues for one night only.

We will therefore be meeting at Newlands Primary School. Newlands is on Elizabeth Street, Coburg North, opposite Coburg Hill development. The entry is on Murphy street. Please enter through the front door and follow the signs. Parking is available in the staff car park or on the street.
