Spend the evening photographing the architecturally sculpted St Kilda Pier and surrounds. Its three stepped tiers sweep in a graceful arc, giving the entire structure a striking sense of movement. Sunseekers, skaters, bathers and fisherman have already made the curving boardwalk their own, adding a lively rhythm to St Kilda’s shoreline.
Wander along the boardwalk photographing the atmosphere as we prepare to watch and capture the sun melting behind the city skyline, as the city lights shine.
The breakwater is also home to a little penguin colony, unfortunately tickets are fully booked out for our night out. Hopefully we can catch a glimpse from the pier itself.

• Capture the curve: Position yourself along the shoreline or use a wide-angle lens on the pier itself to emphasise its signature bend and layered tiers.
• Golden hour magic: Stay for sunset silhouettes against the city skyline.
• Use leading lines: The steps, railings and sweeping arc naturally guide the eye—perfect for dynamic compositions.
• Long exposures: Bring an ND filter to smooth out waves, blur moving crowds or capture skaters in motion for an energetic feel.
• Reflections and textures: Look for reflections on the timber, wet surfaces or shimmering water to add depth to your shots.

Bring a warm jacket, as the pier cools down after sunset and can be quite breezy.
