Club History
The Preston Photographic Club Inc. is proud to be the third oldest photographic club in Victoria, following the Melbourne Camera Club and the Ballarat Camera Club.
Our story began in 1948, when nine photography enthusiasts gathered for the very first meeting in a private home. A second meeting, held on 14 September that same year, led to the formal establishment of the Pictorial Photographic Club, with Mr. Stan Long serving as the first president.
In 1951, the club adopted the name Preston Photographic Club, which it proudly carries today. Over the decades, our meeting places have changed as the club grew. We began at the Scout Hall in Town Hall Avenue, Preston, before moving to the Rechabite Hall on High Street in the mid-1950s. In the late 1970s, meetings shifted to the Reservoir Yacht Club, followed by the Preston Library Annexe on Gower Street in the early 1980s. Most recently, in 2021, the club found a new home at the Kingsbury Bowls Club.
On 9 July 2023, we celebrated our 75th anniversary—a wonderful milestone marked with memories, stories from Life Members past and present, and a celebratory lunch shared among friends.
As photography continues to evolve with new technologies and creative possibilities, so too does our club. What began as a gathering of keen photographers has grown into a welcoming community where people of all ages and skill levels can learn, share, and enjoy the art of photography together.
We look forward with excitement to the next milestone in our journey.
